Bill is a keen chess player and
often plays against his parents.
He wins and loses against both
parents, but his mother is a
better player than his father.
His parents offer to double his
allowance if he can win two
games in a row out of three, with
his parents alternating as opponents.
Which parent should he
play first to maximize his chances
of winning two in a row?

Bridge In Rhyme (S494c)
From: TomFrame2 on 7/10/2006
With 13 or more points, I'm required
to speak
And mention a suit
that is not very weak;
With 5 cards or longer, I need
not be cute,
I merely will open
with one of that suit.
But with a 4-card major... ah,
that's the rub;
I know I must open,
so I'll do,
With 15 to 17, one no-trump
will do,
And with 22 or
more, I'll open with two.
When the opponents have opened,
now I have trouble.
I have an opening
bid and I say so by, "Double".
If the opponents have opened,
my back's to the wall;
I have length and
good points, so I overcall.
My partner has opened, and I'm
in a fix
Because I must
pass with less points than six.
But what if my count is six
to ten?
I must respond
once, but need not again.
But 10 to 12 points is pretty
nice,
I will plan to
respond, not once, but twice.
With 13 or more points, I would
be to blame,
If I let the bid
end before we reach game.

Contract is 6S by West. North
bid 4H over Wests strong 2S opening
Auction: 2S 4H 6S all pass
North led the HK, South following.
Allowing for the not
unlikely 4-1 trump greak, West
took no chances and prceeded
to make her contract.
If, as was likely enough, South's
heart was a singleton, and
he had the SJ, he would over-ruff
dummy's S8 and return a
trump, leaving West with a losing
heart. Hence the high ruff
at trick two. After that
the over-ruff couldn't hurt for
West could afford to lose a
trump. so long as he didn't lose
a heart as well.

Bridge Party And The Cleaning Lady (S492)
From: TomFrame2 on 6/27/2006
A cleaning woman was applying
for a new position, and when
asked why she left her last
employment, she replied. "Yes sir,
they paid good wages, but it
was the most ridiculous place I
ever worked.
They played a game called BRIDGE,
and last night a lot of
folks were there. As I
was about to bring in the refreshments,
I heard a man say, "I got strength
but no length", and another
man says to the lady "take your
hands off my trick." I pretty
near dropped dead. Just
then when the lady answered "you
forced me, you jumped me twice
when you didn't have the
strength for one raise."
Another lady was talking about
protecting her honor, and two
ladies were talking and saying
"now it's time for me to play
with your husband and you can
play with mine." Well, I just
got my hat and coat and as I
was leaving, I hope to die, if
one of them didn't say "Well,
I guess we'll go home now.
This is the last rubber."
