Which Way?
.
.
.
Shemp the Temp had a feeling his new job at Widget World was
too good to be true - and he was right.  For his first day
of training, Shemp's supervisor padlocked him to a platform,
with a gearwheel to his right and a two-ton weight suspend-
ed above his head.  His assignment: to give the wheel a one-
revolution turn, in either a clockwise or counterclockwise
direction.  Based upon his decision, an ominous-looking ax
will swing in one of two directions - releasing the key to
his freedom, or the weight of Wigit World upon his shoulders.
Can you solve Shemp's Damoclean dilemma and advise him
which way the gearwheel should turn?

              THE SOLUTION

Shemp should turn the wheel clockwise to get the
key. (Note: When two gears mesh, one will always
go clockwise and the other counterclockwhise when
viewed from the same direction.  The elbow-like
joints do not change the direction in which the
shaft is spinning.)
